Physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle for all segments of the population but it is especially important for youth. Schools have increasingly recognized the importance of assessing and promoting physical activity in youth, but there are limited options to help evaluate this complex behavior. The Youth Activity Profile (YAP) is a novel online assessment tool designed to streamline and improve the accuracy of self-report physical activity data in youth. The YAP includes 15 brief self-report items that helps children learn about their physical activity and sedentary behavior. Using a robust calibration process, the reported data is converted into values that provide accurate group level estimates of PA for school based evaluations and surveillance. Click the Demo Link to try out the YAP tool.

The tool is currently used in two large Fitnessgram evaluation projects (the Fitnessgram NFL Play 60 / Fitness Gram Partnership Project and the Iowa Fitness Gram Initiative ) as well as the Switch school wellness intervention program . The research is coordinated by the Iowa State University Physical Activity and Health Promotion lab ( ). For information about the ongoing research on the YAP visit .
